CITY MANAGER’S WEEKLY UPDATE Ticket Sales Announced for Ryan Beaver Concert at MCL Grand Tickets went on sale at noon Friday, Feb. 10 for a March 10 concert by up-and-coming Texas musician Ryan Beaver at Medical Center of Lewisville Grand Theater, part of the popular Texas Tunes concert series presented by the City of Lewisville. The show will start at 7:30 p.m. in the Performance Hall of the MCL Grand, 100 N. Charles Street, and will include a brief intermission. Tickets are $15 ($10 for seniors age 60 and older or children age 12 and younger) and can be purchased at MCLGrand.tix.com or at the Customer Service window at Lewisville City Hall, 151 W. Church Street, during regular business hours. Lewisville residents can purchase single-show tickets for $5 each, either in advance at City Hall or on the performance date at the MCL Grand box office. Current driver’s license or utility bill will be required to verify residency. Earlier this month, Beaver was announced as a nominee for “Emerging Artist of the Year” and “Songwriter of the Year” by the Lone Star Music Awards. The 27-year-old Austin-based musician released his first album, “Under the Neons,” in 2008 and since then has toured the Southwest, released three radio singles, and worked on 10 original songs for “Constant,” his recently released second album. “Our lives are always changing and evolving,” said Beaver in explaining the name of his new album, “but some things remain constant. The Texas Tunes series features performers from music halls and festivals throughout the state who present great music in a variety of genres, but all with that unique Texas flair that has made the state a hotbed for fans of live music. The series kicks off Feb. 25 with a performance by Terry Hendrix and Lloyd Maines. Other shows on the schedule are Milk Drive on April 28, and Betty Soo & her band on May 26. Monaghan Wins Prestigious Award Parks and Leisure Services Director Bob Monaghan was honored this week by the Southwest Parks and Recreation Training Institute with the James W. Kitchen Memorial Special Recognition Award. The award recognizes members of SWPRTI who have made substantial lifetime contributions to the organization and to the parks and recreation profession. The James W. Kitchen Special Recognition Award is SWPRTI’s most prestigious award and is presented no more than once per year. Winners of the award must have been members of SWPRTI for at least 15 years and have made significant contributions to SWPRTI through a combination of holding an office, serving on the board or committees, serving as a speaker or service in other capacities that directly contribute to the success of the organization. Social Service Funding Applications Due Feb. 20 The City of Lewisville has announced the availability of funding for social service programs. Funds are available for a one-year grant cycle beginning Oct. 1. Applications will be due Monday, Feb. 20, at noon, and agency presentations will be held Saturday, March 3. Workshop on Community Needs to be Held The Economic Development and Planning Department is inviting the public to attend an interactive workshop to discuss community needs on Saturday, Feb. 18 at Old Town City Hall. Registration and breakfast begin at 8:30 a.m. and the workshop will run until noon. It will consist of four break-out sessions focusing on housing and neighborhoods; community and social services; public facilities and transportation; and economic development, employment and education. The workshop will be facilitated by project consultant J-Quad Planning Group who is conducting a Community Needs Assessment for the City. Priorities established by the Needs Assessment will help guide spending decisions for the Community Development Block Grant program and the City Social Service Agency Fund. Block Grant Survey Available Online A survey is available at cityoflewisville.com that will help determine funding priorities for the next five years. The Housing & Community Development Consolidated Plan Survey will help the City of Lewisville evaluate and prioritize community needs. The plan will set priorities for allocating Community Development Block Grant funds for the next five years. The survey takes just 5-7 minutes to complete and will be available through February 17, 2012. The survey may be completed electronically by downloading the Word Template document, check-marking boxes, filling in fields (first tab to the field then left click on the box), saving the document and then emailing the completed survey to J-Quad Planning Group, the project consultant. Box 803288, Dallas, TX 75380. Basic Wildland Class Held LFD participated in a combined exercise for completion of the S130/190 class. This is the basic wildland class being taught by Lewisville instructors who attended the Texas Intrastate Fire Mutual Aid System (TIFMAS) training classes last summer. Attending the class were members from Plano FD, Highland Village FD, and Roanoke FD. Approx 100 total local firefighters received this training and LFD has completed all requirements by TIFMAS for full credentialing. More advanced training will follow later on this summer. Tax Assistance Available at Senior Activity Center AARP is offering their FREE annual tax assistance every Monday from 8:30-2:30 p.m., now through April 16th at the Lewisville Senior Activity Center, 1950A S. Birding Topic of First Garden Secrets Class Feb. 16 Keep Lewisville Beautiful will hold its first Garden Secrets class of the year on Thursday, Feb. 16, 6-7 p.m. at the Glenmore Savage Community Room of the Lewisville Municipal Annex, 1197 W. Main Street. The free class on beginner birding is the perfect class for those who love bird watching, counting and making an environment that is inviting to these birds. Key speaker for the class is Lisa Cole from Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area (LLELA), who will discuss bird habitats, silhouettes, field markings and other identification tips.
