Pipelines


    Pipelines may or may not be easily identifiable so check with your utility company before you dig. Be familiar with gas well sites and pipelines in your area. Signs indicating the pipelines location are often placed along its path, these signs are placed to help prevent accidents. There is often little or no warning with incidents involving pipelines so be familiar with pipeline sites.

    Signs of a pipeline leak:


      · Strong petroleum smell or other pungent order such as sulfur (if an odorant is added).

      · Dead vegetation or fire near the ground near the pipeline

      · Dirt being blown around near the pipeline or a fog like cloud near the pipeline.

      · A hissing, gurgling or roaring sound.


    In the event of an incident:


      · Leave the area immediately on foot

      · Warn others in the area

      · Refrain from activities that could cause sparks

      · Don’t drive into a vapor cloud

      · Do not make contact with any escaping material, some products may be corrosive or toxic.

      · Notify 9-1-1 of the leak when you reach safety. Do not use your phone near the leak.

      · Follow all instructions issued by authorities.
