West Nile Virus


    West Nile Virus first appeared in North America in 1999 with encephalitis (inflammation of the spinal cord and brain) in humans and horses. The easiest way to avoid West Nile Virus is to prevent mosquito bites.

    These tips can help:


      · Use insect repellent when outdoors.

      · Many mosquitoes are active at dawn and dusk. Use insect repellent  and wear long sleeves and pants or consider staying indoors during these hours.

      · Get rid of breeding sites by emptying standing water around your home.

      · Make sure you have good screens on your doors and windows to keep out mosquitoes.


    Symptoms of West Nile Virus include:


      · Fever

      · Headache

      · Neck Stiffness

      · Disorientation

      · Tremors

      · Convulsions

      · Muscle Weakness

      · Vision Loss

      · Numbness and Paralysis 

      · Rash on the chest, stomach and back

      · Nausea and Vomiting

      · Swollen Lymph Glands
