POLICE OFFICER JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB SUMMARY

Enforces federal and state laws and local ordinances. Performs a variety of duties relative to assigned area of responsibility such as identifying and apprehending criminal violators; ensuring the free flow of traffic; executing warrants of arrest and assisting in serving warrants; ensuring the safe and legal operation of jail; presenting crime prevention programs.

JOB SCOPE

No supervisory or budgetary responsibilities.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

(Duties and responsibilities will vary depending on the area of assigned responsibility.)

1. Responds to radio calls for all types of police services.

2. Patrols assigned geographic area to identify and deter criminal activity, aids citizens needing assistance, and arrests violators of the laws.

3. Issues citations and investigates traffic accidents.

4. Testifies in legal proceedings.

5. Conducts investigations of criminal offenses, missing persons, and all public safety incidents.

6. Prepares written reports as required by specific assignment.

7. Intervenes and mediates in crisis situations and all types of disputes.

8. Instructs citizens, businesses, school, and civic organizations about methods and techniques that may help prevent citizens from becoming victims of crime.

9. Develops and implements community-based policing strategies and programs.

10. Executes misdemeanor and felony warrants of arrest.

11. May serve as Court Bailiff for Municipal Court.

12. Takes fines and bonds and releases prisoners.

OTHER IMPORTANT JOB FUNCTIONS

13. Performs all other related duties as assigned.

14. Operates assigned police vehicles in a safe manner to avoid accidents.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

Skills in mediation and self defense techniques.

Ability to read, interpret, learn and apply laws, regulations and departmental policies and procedures.

Knowledge of human behavior and motivation.

Ability to communicate effectively with all types of individuals.

Ability to remain calm and decisive under extreme stress.

Ability to distinguish between red, yellow, and green in order to accurately describe suspects and vehicles and to identify traffic lights and sign colors.

Ability to successfully pass a written exam and validated physical agility test.

Ability to pass a polygraph, medical examination, and a drug screen.

Ability to pass background investigation.

May require other skills, knowledge and abilities depending on assigned area of responsibility.

EDUCATION

High school diploma or GED required.

EXPERIENCE

Law enforcement or related experience preferred.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Valid State of Texas Driver's License (Class "C") required.

Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education License preferred.

Minimum Age - 21

Successful completion of the physical examination specified for the position.

Candidates are required to pass a polygraph, background investigation, drug screen, physical agility test, and written examination.

Must have vision correctable to 20/20 binocular.

Must be able to distinguish between the colors red, yellow, and green.
