Types of Library Cards

The Lewisville Public Library offers 5 levels of card access:

  • Full Privilege Card
    • Eligibility: Adults ages 18+, children ages 5-17 with their parent or guardian
    • Privileges: borrow up to 25 library items, access digital collections and electronic resources, use public computers or laptop, reserve meeting rooms, use Interlibrary Loan, renew items and place holds

  • Student Card
    • Eligibility: Students ages 12-17 who live within the boundaries of Lewisville ISD, including private school and homeschool students. These students may get a Student Card without a parent or guardian present. Eligibility for LISD residence will be verified via taxing jurisdiction on the Denton Central Appraisal District website.
    • Privileges: use public computers, access digital collections and electronic resources. The student card does not include borrowing privileges for any physical library materials. The student card does not include privileges for meeting room reservation.
    • Student Cards can be upgraded to a full privilege card when a parent or guardian accompanies the student to the Library with the appropriate ID and proof of address.

  • Temporary Card
    • Eligibility: Adults ages 18 who are eligible for a card but are currently unable to provide proof of address.
    • Privileges: use of public computers. No borrowing privileges will be enabled until proof of address is provided and the card is upgraded to a full privilege card.
    • Temporary Cards are valid for one month. Once the temporary card expires, there are no further privileges available until proof of address is provided and the card is upgraded to a full privilege card.

  • TexShare Card
    • TexShare is a cooperative program designed to improve library service to Texans. The TexShare card allows patrons to visit more than 500 libraries throughout the State of Texas and check out materials. Patrons must have a Lewisville full privilege card for at least six months with no outstanding balance in order to be eligible for a TexShare card. Patrons who are issued a Lewisville TexShare card may take that card to obtain a library card at another TexShare participating library and are responsible for returning the items borrowed to the lending library.   • Daily Guest Pass
    • Eligibility: Patrons who do not have a Lewisville Public Library account, are only visiting the area, or need Library public computer access for a short period of time. To obtain a guest pass, patrons must be at least 18 years old and provide a picture ID. Proof of address is not required. As stewards of public property, it is appropriate for the Library to have the identification of all individuals using public computers.
    • Privileges: Guest passes are issued on a daily basis and will allow access to the Library's public computers only. No borrowing privileges are allowed.
    • Patrons are allowed three uses of a guest pass in a 90-day period. Patrons needing more frequent use than this will need to consider getting a full privilege library card. Only one guest pass will be issued per person.
 

Any resident of Texas is eligible for a free Lewisville Public Library card. A valid government-issued photo ID and proof of Texas address are required to establish an account.

Acceptable government-issued photo IDs include:

  • Texas Driver's License
  • Texas State ID
  • Passport
  • Military ID
  • Green Card/Resident Alien Registration/Mexican Consular card
  • LISD Student ID (student cards only)

If the address on the ID is current, it may be used as proof of current address.

Acceptable proof of address in card holder's name includes:

  • Current utility bill
  • Official rent receipt, rental agreement, contract or lease
  • Car or vehicle insurance or registration
  • Personalized check, savings passbook, bank or credit union statement
  • Voter registration card
  • Paycheck stub
  • Recent postmarked mail (within 30 days)

Age Requirements

  • Adult, age 18+
  • Teen, age 12-17
  • Juvenile, age 5-11
  • Children are eligible for their first library card when they turn five years old.
  • Children ages 5-17must be accompanied by a parent or guardian with the identification described above in order to receive a full privilege library card in their name.

 Card Renewal


Full privilege and student library cards expire every 2 years. When accounts expire, patrons are asked to visit the Accounts Desk with their current government-issued ID, so that library staff may ensure the security of your account and can verify that the information on file is still current. There is no charge to renew a library card.
Guest Pass A guest pass may be issued to patrons vising the area and whom will not be establishing a library account. A guest pass allows the user to access the Library’s computers only. A guest pass is issued on a daily basis at the Accounts Desk. Guest passes are issued to anyone at least 18 years old with a valid, government issued photo ID.
Check-Out Library Materials A Lewisville Public Library card is needed to checkout library materials. The library allows up to 25 items to be checked out on a card at one time. Media items such as DVDs, audiobooks, music, etc. are limited to 5 items per media type on a card at one time.

All items except DVD/Blu-rays, Storytime Backpacks, and Book Club in a Bag Kits, check out for 3 weeks at a time. DVD/Blu-rays and Storytime Backpacks check out for 1 week at a time. Book Club in a Bag Kits check out for 6 weeks at a time. Items may be renewed online or over the phone up to three times, as long as there are no holds on the item.

Items may be checked out and renewed on one of the Library’s 3 self-checkout machines. The self-checkout machines also enable a card holder to review their account for information relating to items currently checked out, items on hold, and outstanding fees.
 Renew My Materials

The Lewisville Public Library allows an item to be renewed up to three times, as long as there are no holds on the item. Materials may be renewed at the Library, online via your Library Account, or over the phone by calling the Accounts Desk at 972.219.3570, option 2.

Returning Library Materials A drive-up book drop is located off Civic Circle on the west side of the Library and is available 24 hours a day. Items may be returned through the drive-up book drop by 11:59 p.m. of the due date to avoid late fees. Inside book returns are located on the left side of the Accounts Desk.

Items returned through any of our book returns are automatically checked in and cleared from the account. All items should be returned through one of the book returns prior to paying overdue charges at the Accounts Desk.
Fines

For most item types, the library charges a fee of $0.25 per day per item for items returned or renewed late. Specialty kits, Interlibrary Loan items, and mobile hotspots will be charged a fee of $3.00 per day per item for items returned late. Accumulated fines of more than $5.00 will block the account and prevent further checkout of print and electronic materials, as well as block access to the Library's public use computers.

A guest pass may be issued to patrons with a balance over $4.99 if:

  • a minimum payment of $5.00 against the overdue fines is made, and
  • there are no no current damaged or lost item bills. Damaged or lost item bills must be paid in full before a guest pass will be issued.

Fines may be paid at the Accounts Desk by cash, check or credit card, or by credit card at the self-check kiosk.

Parents are financially responsible for all fines and/or fees billed to Teen or Juvenile accounts.

Holds
A hold may be placed online on any Library item with a limit of 10 item holds per card at any one time. The Library offers notification by email or phone. Once the item becomes available the Library will hold the item for 6 days. Only the card used to place the hold can check out the item.

Items may be picked up from the Holds Pick-up shelf located inside the Library on the first floor. They are arranged alphabetically by the card holder’s last name and may be checked out using the self-checkout machines. DVD/Blu-rays and Interlibrary Loan items on hold may be picked up from the Accounts Desk.
 Drive-Up Window Once you have been notified your hold is available, the drive-up window may be used for hold pickup with prior notification of at least 30 minutes. Please call the Accounts Desk to make arrangements to pick up your holds at the drive-up window. Accounts must be current and with no outstanding fees in order to use the drive-up window. Payment for Library fines/fees cannot be made at the drive-up window, but must be made inside the Library at the Accounts Desk.
Reset PIN   A PIN is required, in addition to your library card number, in order to access your library account online. A random PIN was generated and given to you at the time that you applied for your library card. If you have forgotten your PIN, you can reset it online by going to the Library account login page, and clicking on 'Forgot my PIN' and entering your library card number.  This feature will allow you to reset your PIN by way of the email address on file in your library account. If you unable to reset your PIN online, please visit the Accounts Desk.
Lost Cards To report a lost library card, please call the Accounts Desk at 972.219.3570, option 2. Card holders are responsible for all items checked out on their card. A replacement card may be purchased for $1 at the Accounts Desk.
