The Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area will host classes on four days this spring specifically for home school students. Students will participate in hands-on outdoor activities related to the day’s theme. All dates are 10:00 a.m.—2:00 p.m., with a 30-minute lunch break. Each class will have separate sessions on the same topic for 2nd-5th graders and for students 6th grade and up. The fee is $10 per class, or $35 for the whole series of four classes.
Themes for the four sessions are:
· March 29: Window on the Past—Spend some time in 1869 as we tour the Minor-Porter Log House, do the “chores” at a real log house, and discover our community’s past.
· April 26: Aquatic Ecology—Meet the diverse plants and animals in the Beaver Pond as we learn about the ways in which living things, including us, depend on water.
· May 10: Prairie Primer—A prairie is more than just grass. One ecologist has referred to this ecosystem as an “upside-down rainforest.” Learn more about the amazing relationships within a grassland as we discover prairie soils, birds, insects, and more.
· May 24: Into the Forest—Observe decomposers at work, learn to identify North Texas trees, and study woodland wildlife in this introduction to forestry.
Pre-registration is required. Please call Lisa Cole, LLELA Education Coordinator, at 972-219-3930 or e-mail lisacole@unt.edu for more information or to register. Participants should bring a sack lunch and a refillable water bottle, and wear long pants and closed-toe shoes. Parents should plan to stay with their students for the day. Younger siblings are welcome to tag along, so long as they are adequately supervised by a parent during class time. Classes will be rescheduled in the event of rain.
The Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area is 2,000 acres of prairies, forests, and wetlands managed as a wildlife preserve by a group of agencies including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the University of North Texas, the City of Lewisville, Lewisville ISD, and Texas A & M University. Our mission is to preserve and restore our native ecosystems and to provide and promote environmental education and scientific research. |
